This hot tub filter works by using a mesh that is covered with a layer of diatomaceous earth, which is used to suck in microscopic particles. Despite the name, DE is made from crushed bones that have been petrified, so they function like sponges that contain millions of tiny pores. The main benefit of using DE hot tub filters is that they are made from natural sources, so you can claim that you are being "carbon neutral" and you do not have to worry about putting extra chemicals in your hot tub. A major downside to this type of hot tub filter is that there are very strict rules on disposing of them.

A second type of hot tub filter is a sand filter, which acts like one of the filters in a water purification plant. It drains the water through a bed of sand, which gets finer towards the bottom of the filter to remove almost anything from the water. Using a sand filter has very few downsides, apart from the fact that some of the coagulating chemicals may seep out into the main hot tub, and the sand needs to be replaced about once every three years.

Although the DE filter and sand filter are two very good hot tub filter options, by far the most popular hot tub filter is the simple cartridge filter, which is made from Dacron. This hot tub filter consists of a very fine mesh that is laid out with small pleats all across it, which make sure that everything except the water is removed from your hot tub.
